Wine from Primitivo Grapes

The Primitivo grapes had first been planted by the Benedictine monks in Bari. According to historic documents, the Benedictine Don Filippe Francesco Indellicati Primicerio selected and planted a new wine clone by the end of the 7th century. As it reached ripeness very early in the year, he called it Primitivo.

Flavours of the Primitivo wine

The classification „Primitivo di Manduria DOP“ requires the use of at least 85% of grapes grown in the geographical zones of Manduria-Sava and/or the communes of the neighbor region Taranto (Lizzano, San Marzano, Pulsano, Torricella, Maruggio, Avetrana, etc.) and the region Brindisi (Oria, Erchie, Torre Santa Susanna, etc.). The vinification must be done in these zones too.

The Primitivo di Manduria has a worldwide reputation as an extraordinary wine and is a good ambassador of Puglia. The ruby-red color tends to violet with some orange reflects when aged. Bouquet and taste are unmistakable full, harmonic, light velvety and at higher age a bit sweety. It remembers of black berry with some taste of cinnamon and nuts.

Primitivo IGT Salento

The classification „IGT - the Italian Country Wine“ IGT stands for Indicazione Geografica Tipica. A wine with a typical, country-oriented characteristic of a well-defined area of origin. In Switzerland, in Germany or Austria this wine is called Country Wine, in France Vin de Pays. It represents either the characteristic of a region, e.g. „IGT - Rosso di Toscana” or the characteristic of the grape of a region, e.g. “Primitivo IGT Salento” made from grapes from Manduria. If a vineyard produces a higher yield than the DOP maximum yield, its wine cannot be classified as DOP wine - it will become an IGT-wine. This is also known as de-classification. The IGT-classification exists since 1992. Today there are more than 140 IGT areas of origin, which represent ca. 30% of the Italian wine.

The sugar concentration of ITG grapes are lower than of DOC grapes and the maximum yield of grapes per hectares is significant higher compared to DOC. Some ITG areas contain entire regions, like Tuscany, Umbria or Marken.
